Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting Jamaicans. While it is more frequently diagnosed in women, men are in no way immune from the disease.

But there’s encouraging news! Early detection can significantly improve treatment options and outcomes. A mammogram, which is a specialised X-ray of the breast, can detect changes long before a lump is felt or other symptoms appear.

To help more Jamaicans access this important screening service, the National Health Fund (NHF) has expanded its mammogram benefit.

Supporting more women through earlier screening

The NHF mammogram benefit now includes women aged 30 to 40 who are considered at high risk of developing breast cancer. This may include women with a strong family history of the disease or other risk factors identified by a healthcare professional.

Earlier access to screening is especially important for high-risk women, who may need to begin monitoring their breast health before the standard screening age.

Women aged 40 to 74 also remain eligible for support through the benefit.

Expanding access for men

While breast cancer is often viewed as a women’s health issue, men should also be aware of changes in their breast tissue and discuss any concerns with a doctor.

The NHF mammogram benefit has now been expanded to include men aged 40 and over, helping to improve awareness and access to care for those who may need further assessment or screening.

Why mammograms matter

Mammograms can help to:

• Detect breast cancer before symptoms appear

• Identify changes that may be too small to feel

• Support earlier diagnosis and treatment

• Provide reassurance and greater peace of mind

Eligible beneficiaries can receive a $3,000 subsidy towards the cost of a mammogram. A valid NHFCard and government-issued identification are required when accessing the benefit.

Feeling healthy does not always mean that there are no changes developing in the body. This is why regular screening and conversations with a healthcare provider are so important.

Women and men who fall within the eligible groups are encouraged to speak with their doctor about their breast cancer risk and whether a mammogram is appropriate.
