Cervical Cancer
What is Cervical Cancer?
Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. In Jamaica, it’s one of the most common cancers affecting women. But here’s the good news: it’s also one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when caught early.
How can it be Prevented?
Pap Smear
Think of a Pap smear as a health check for your cervix. It helps doctors find any early warning signs before cancer develops. Women ages 21 to 64 can get help paying for Pap smears through the National Health Fund (NHF). This makes it more affordable at participating healthcare providers.
HPV Vaccine
Cervical cancer is usually caused by a virus called HPV (Human Papillomavirus). The HPV vaccine protects against the most dangerous types of this virus. It works best when given before someone becomes sexually active, but it’s helpful even after that.
You may contact health centres across Jamaica regarding availability of this vaccine.
Cervical cancer is serious, but it’s also preventable. Regular Pap smears and the HPV vaccine are powerful tools that can save lives. Talk to a healthcare provider and take action early.
