Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
What is COPD?
COPD is a long-term lung disease that makes breathing difficult due to narrowed airways and lung damage. It is most often caused by prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke or air pollution.
Signs and Symptoms
A persistent cough (with or without mucus), shortness of breath during everyday activities, wheezing, chest tightness and frequent chest infections.
Not everybody will get all these symptoms. Some people experience them from time to time, perhaps if they get a cold, or come into contact with one of their asthma triggers.
Others experience the worst symptoms at night, first thing in the morning or after exercise. A few people may experience these symptoms all the time.
Why it Matters
COPD is a growing concern in Jamaica, especially among smokers and persons exposed to environmental irritants. Early diagnosis can help slow progression and improve quality of life
