When most people think of healthcare workers, doctors and nurses often come to mind. Yet,
pharmacists play an equally crucial role. They are the frontline healthcare professionals we
encounter most frequently, working in pharmacies conveniently located in our communities
among the first points of contact in primary care. Quite simply, we could not receive the
healthcare we need without our pharmacists.

Celebrating World Pharmacist Day

World Pharmacist Day, observed on September 25, was established by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in 1912 to honour pharmacists for their indispensable contributions to healthcare. This year’s theme, ‘Pharmacists: Meeting Global Health Needs’, emphasises the pivotal role these healthcare professionals play in meeting healthcare challenges worldwide.

Why Pharmacists Matter

Pharmacists are much more than the people who hand us our prescriptions. They are trusted healthcare providers who ensure the safe and effective use of medications. Their advice extends beyond the counter—helping patients manage their medications, store them correctly and adhere to treatment plans. Whether in person, by phone, or even via messaging, pharmacists are accessible and ready to provide expert guidance.

Kerrian Miller is one such pharmacist that stands ready to help her patients. Working at the Spanish Town Hospital Drug Serv she often counsels patients, not only about their medication, but any problem they raise. “Sometimes, the patient has other issues and they just want somebody to listen to them,” she says, allowing her to put her people skills to use.

More than Just Dispensing Medication

While pharmacists do spend much of their time dispensing medications, their expertise doesn’t end there. Miller, for example, who works in the hospital’s outpatient department, says she is responsible for its smooth operation, including the triaging of patients. Other pharmacists in the profession may also do community and inpatient visits, as well as educational sessions.

Many pharmacists are also deeply involved in pharmaceutical research and development, working behind the scenes to create and test new medications. Some specialise in pharmacovigilance, the rigorous testing of new drugs and vaccines during clinical trials. This means pharmacists are involved at every step—from the creation of new treatments to ensuring they safely reach the patients who need them most.

Getting Into the Profession

Chief Pharmacist at the Spanish Town Hospital Drug Serv, Samantha Blake-Gordon, credits her cousin for introducing her to the profession. She says her cousin, who was a pharmacy technician, often carried her around the pharmacy and that sparked her interest, which led her to studying pharmacology after sixth form. “It was one of the best decisions I have made,” she says. “I am really happy that I followed my heart’s desire at the time because it worked out in my favour. I don’t see myself being in any other profession.” 

For Miller, pharmacy combines two of her passions. “I like the sciences; I find them very fascinating,” she says. “I also like to help people, so I thought pharmacy was a good middle ground.” This sweet spot makes her work enjoyable, with her favourite part being the customer interactions.

The NHF operates 106 public pharmacies called Drug Servs located at health centres and hospitals across the island. We currently have a team of 285 Pharmacists that continue to play a pivotal role in meeting the health needs of Jamaicans.
