Get the Facts about Endometriosis

Are you a woman? Do you know a woman? If yes, you are aware of how awful monthly periods can be, and conditions such as endometriosis donot make the monthly experience any more manageable.

According to Dr Chris-Ann Simpson Harley, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to that lining the uterus which is shed on a monthly basis as menstruation, grows outside of the uterus causing severe pain.

How much do you know about endometriosis? Dr Harley joined us in Twitter Spaces this week and shared some facts. Here a few:

1. Painful periods are not normal, contrary to popular belief. If your functionality is impaired due to painful periods or other symptoms, visit a gynaecologist to be checked.
2. Medical professionals say endometriosis can be found in every organ of the body, though not as common as the uterus. Endometrial tissue can grow in areas such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the abdomen, lungs, bowel, bladder, and even blood vessels.
3. Endometrium-type tissue that grows outside the uterus also sheds on a monthly basis. This can lead to endometriomas or chocolate cysts.
4. While genetics play a major role, every female that menstruates is at risk of endometriosis.
5. Endometriosis can cause bleeding for longer than the 5-7 day window associated with a regular menstrual cycle.
6. This condition is one of the leading causes of absences from work and school for women and girls.
7. Diet has direct effects on the condition. Dr Harley shared that consuming too much red meat can put women at a greater risk. She encouraged women to eat more fruits, vegetables and seafood.
8. Every female that has started her cycle is encouraged to visit the doctor for annual checks. The sooner the condition is detected, the better.

Endometriosis has no cure and is costly to manage. The condition isn’t covered on the NHFCard Programme but the NHF has made provision for private patients to fill their prescriptions at a lesser cost at select Drug Serv pharmacies island wide.
