Living with diabetes is a daily commitment. From checking blood sugar levels to taking medication, making healthy food choices and staying active, managing the condition is an ongoing responsibility. Having the right supplies readily available can make all the difference.
That’s why the National Health Fund (NHF) includes diabetes as one of the 28 chronic illnesses covered under its NHFCard, providing subsidies for medications, medical tests and supplies.
Easier access when you need it
One of the biggest changes to the NHFCard programme is the removal of the prior claim requirement to access diabetic supplies. This means eligible beneficiaries no longer need to meet this requirement before receiving support for approved supplies, making the process faster and more convenient.
The change reflects the NHF’s commitment to reducing barriers to care, so Jamaicans living with diabetes can focus on managing their health rather than navigating unnecessary hurdles.
Supporting better diabetes management
Through the expanded programme, eligible beneficiaries can access support for essential diabetic supplies, including:
• Blood glucose meters, also known as glucometers
• Blood glucose test strips
• Lancets used for blood sugar testing
Beneficiaries can also receive subsidies on approved diabetes medication. Together, these benefits can help reduce the financial burden of living with diabetes while supporting more consistent monitoring and better day-to-day management.
Small steps can make a big difference
Whether you have recently been diagnosed or have been living with diabetes for years, having access to the right support can make managing the condition less overwhelming.
Good diabetes management includes:
• monitoring your blood sugar as recommended by your healthcare provider
• taking medication consistently
• eating balanced meals and staying physically active
• attending regular medical check-ups, and
• making full use of the benefits available through the NHF
Take advantage of the support available
No one should have to face the challenges of diabetes alone. If you are living with diabetes, speak with your healthcare provider or contact the NHF at (876) 906-1106 or visit www.nhf.org.jm/nhf-card to learn more about the NHFCard and the full range of benefits available.
With the right medication, monitoring supplies and support, managing diabetes can become easier. We’ll help you protect your health today and in the years ahead.
