Breast cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers affecting Jamaican women. The good news, however, is that early detection can save lives. A mammogram, which is a simple X-ray of the breast, remains the most effective tool for detecting breast cancer early, often long before any symptoms appear. When detected early, there are more treatment options available, higher likelihoods of recovery and lower costs for treatment. 

That is why the National Health Fund (NHF) has introduced a new $3,000 subsidy benefit to support women aged 40 and over in getting an annual mammogram. This benefit is another step in the NHF’s commitment to preventive care.

Why Mammograms Matter

Mammograms allow doctors to identify abnormalities years before they can be felt during a physical examination. They also help guide treatment planning by showing the size, location and nature of any developing mass. Health experts recommend that women begin screening at age 40 and continue every year. Women with a family history of breast cancer may need to begin even earlier.

According to radiographer and mammographer Yashika Salmon of Apex Radiology, mammograms are quick, simple and reliable. She explains that the breast is briefly compressed between two plates so that clear images can be taken. While this may be uncomfortable for a moment, the procedure is safe, uses a very low dose of radiation and takes roughly 15 minutes. 

Making Access Easier

The NHFCard Mammogram Subsidy helps women access screening without worrying about the full cost. All eligible women need is their NHFCard. 

Salmon notes that making mammograms more affordable will help more women get screened, which can ultimately reduce breast cancer deaths in Jamaica. When more women participate in early detection, more families and communities are protected.

A Call to Action

Many women delay screening because they feel healthy or have no symptoms. But most breast cancers found on mammograms show no lump and no signs.
