$1.36 BILLION APPROVED FOR PROJECTS BY NHF IN 2006 & 22 PROJECTS COMPLETED

The National Health Fund (NHF) approved a total of $1.36 billion in grants for thirty-five (35) new projects during 2006. This brought the total number of projects approved by the NHF from its inception to the end of 2006, to 109 projects valued at $3.8 billion.

Among the projects approved was $327.6 million for strengthening of the expanded programme on immunization and a grant of US$1.6 million for the purchase of 40 new ambulances for the public health sector. Other major projects approved during the year included a grant of $40 million for the modification and extension of the Spanish Town Hospital Accident and Emergency Department and a grant for the purchase, modification and equipping of Ascot Hall for use as the Old Harbour Health Centre.

Twenty-two (22) NHF sponsored projects valued $157 million were completed in 2006. The Black River Hospital completed most projects by a single institution – the upgrading and expansion of the operating theatre and medical gas system, the purchase and installation of new equipment for the Accident and Emergency Department including a new ambulance.

Other projects completed were the purchase and distribution of radiographic cassettes for hospitals across the island; a new air condition system for the Spanish Town Hospital operating theatre; equipping of the Ministry of Health National Emergency Operations Centre and the provision of a new mobile screening unit and equipment for CPR Training for the Heart Foundation of Jamaica.

Mr. Baldwin Tucker, Institutional Benefits Manager, NHF says ?While progress was made in completing several projects during 2006 we would like to see a major improvement in the timely completion of more NHF sponsored projects in 2007.?

He noted that renewed efforts will be made by the NHF in 2007 to assist the public sector in fast tracking the completion of projects so that the benefits from the NHF can flow more quickly in improving the delivery of health care to the public.
