BLACK RIVER HOSPITAL BEING REFURBISHED WITH $35MILLION GRANT FROM NHF

The National Health Fund, NHF has approved grants totaling over $35 million for the Black River Hospital to assist with the upgrading and refurbishing of the facility. Mr. Raymond Brooks, Vice-Chairman of the National Health Fund, speaking at a function held recently to hand over a new ambulance to the Black River Hospital, pointed out that four projects were approved by the NHF for the hospital.

Mr. Brooks said the new ambulance valued at $2.6 million was part of a $20 million grant from the NHF to support the emergency services at the hospital and that new equipment was also being provided from this grant for the Accident and Emergency Department.

In his remarks at the handing-over ceremony the NHF Vice-Chairman noted that other support for the hospital from the NHF included a grant of $14 million for the repair and refurbishing of the Operating Theatre, and other areas of the hospital following from the damage caused by Hurricane Ivan. ?This work should be completed by the end of next month ? March 2006,? he promised. A NHF grant of $1.5 million was also provided for the upgrading of the laundry which was recently completed.

?In addition,? he said, ?The hospital is also benefiting from a grant which was given to the Southern Regional Health Authority, for communication infrastructure in this Health Region. The computerization of the hospital has enabled direct links between the Hospital and the Regional Office.?

Mr. Brooks noted that the NHF has so far approved grants amounting to $2.4 million under its Institutional Benefits Fund, for numerous projects in order to improve the delivery of health care across the island.
