Four New Drugs Added To NHF Drug List

The National Health Fund, NHF, has added four new drugs to its NHFcard Drug List for the treatment of Hypertension, Ischaemic Heart Disease and Glaucoma.

The drugs are combinations of existing active ingredients. For the treatment of Hypertension and Ischaemic Heart Disease, the new drugs are – Amlodipine 5mg & Atorvastatin 10mg tablets with a subsidy of $104.41per tablet, Amlodipine 5mg & Atorvastatin 20mg , with a subsidy of $169.85 per tablet , Atenolol 50mg & Nifedipine20mg tablet with a subsidy of $8.45 for tablet. For the treatment of Glaucoma the new drugs are Latanoprost 0.005% & Timolol 0.5%, with a subsidy of $1,225.12 for the 2.5 millilitre eye drops and Travoprost 0.004% & Timolol 0.5% with a subsidy of $1,578.17 for the 2.5 millilitre eye drops.

The NHF recently added the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), Etanercept, used to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This is an expensive drug which should be available through NHF participating pharmacies and NHF beneficiaries are asked to request the drug from their pharmacy ahead of time so arrangements can be made to procure the drug which is often not stocked by many pharmacies. The NHFcard subsidy for each kit of 4 unit doses is $37,747.24.
