NEW AIR-CONDITION UNIT INSTALLED FOR OPERATING THEATRES AT SPANISH TOWN HOSPITAL TO IMPROVE THEATRE SERVICES

Installation of a new Fresh Air-conditioning System for the main Operating Theatre Suite at the Spanish Town Hospital in St. Catherine has been completed and the theatres are now back in full operation. The hospital received a grant of $3.9 million from the National Health Fund, NHF, for the purchase and installation of the unit.

The old air conditioning unit had major maintenance problems and several days of downtime each month. The new forty (40) ton 100% fresh air-condition unit allows the main operating theatres to be in constant use. This has enhanced the institutions ability to provide emergency surgery and allows more operating time for elective surgeries. Just over 3,200 major operations are done at Spanish Town Hospital each year and approximately 62% are emergency cases. Of the 1,800 minor operations done each year 76% are for emergency cases as well.

Mr. David Dobson, CEO of the Spanish Town Hospital, says the full functioning of the operating theatres will increase the number of elective operations, reduce the risk of infections and reduce the waiting time for such surgeries at a faster rate. The new unit has also eliminated the high maintenance costs that were necessary to keep the old unit in service.

The main operating theatre suite at Spanish Town Hospital has two operating theatres and a two (2) bed recovery room that provides 24 hour emergency service in addition to daily elective surgery cases. The hospital is a very busy one with the number of major surgical operations performed each month being second only to the number performed at Kingston Public Hospital and the number of minor operations second only to the University Hospital of the West Indies.

The NHF provides grants to institutions in the public health sector, through its Health Support Fund to improve the delivery of health care throughout the island.

Since it started disbursements of grants the NHF has approved approximately $1.2 billion for public hospitals across the island.
