NEW PORTABLE ULTRASOUND MACHINES & TRAINING OF PHYSICIANS TO IMPROVE PATIENT ASSESSMENT IN A&E UNITS

Twenty-one physicians working in Accident and Emergency Units in twelve of the island’s public hospitals, recently received training in the use of portable ultrasound machines that were purchased with funding from the National Health Fund (NHF) for these health facilities.

The training course, which was sponsored by the NHF, ran over four days at the Kingston Public (KPH) and the Cornwall Regional (CRH) Hospitals, focused on different functions and applications of the machine, particularly in the Emergency Room.

The training was conducted by Dr. Trevor Dixon, Director of Emergency Ultrasound Education, Newark Beth Israel Medical Centre, in New Jersey, USA, a Jamaican who has pledged to conduct further training in Ultrasound techniques for local emergency care physicians.

Dr. Hugh Wong, Consultant in the Accident and Emergency Department at KPH who organized the training course says “As the doctors become more proficient and confident in the use of the portable ultrasound machines, patient care in A&E Departments will improve as ultrasound technology will assist the emergency physicians to more quickly assess patients brought in for treatment.”
