NHF ADDS ANOTHER MEDICATION TO BREAST & PROSTATE CANCER DRUG LIST

The National Health Fund (NHF) has added the drug Paclitaxel, an antineoplastic drug, to its Drug List for the treatment of both breast and prostate cancers. The drug is in the form of an injection and the NHF subsidy is $106.08 for each milligram. The injection which is a powerful drug for treating cancer is available in various strengths ranging between 30 milligrams to 300 milligrams. NHF has 4,955 men enrolled for prostate cancer and 2,265 persons including both men and women enrolled for breast cancer as at October 31, 2007. Approximately $12.32 million in subsidy was paid out for Prostate Cancer drugs and $2.21 million in subsidy for breast cancer drugs for the month of October 2007. The addition of Paclitaxel injection brings the total number of active ingredients available on the NHF Drug List for the treatment of these two cancers to fourteen. The other injections on the List are Cyclophosphamide, Fluorouracil, Goserelin, Methotrexate Sodium, Leuprolide and Mesna.Persons with prostate and breast cancers, who are residents of Jamaica, are invited to enroll with the NHF and obtain assistance to purchase prescription items on the NHF Drug List for the treatment of their disease.
