NHF ADDS THREE(3) NEW DRUGS & NEW DRUG LABELS FOR EXISTING DRUGS,TOITS INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

In keeping with its mandate to continually review the pharmaceutical items available under its Individual Benefits list, the NHF has added three new drugs. They are the combination Salbutamol & Beclomethasone for the treatment of Asthma, Bisoprolol and Bisoprolol Hydrochlorothiazide for the treatment of Hypertension and Ischaemic Heart Disease. The subsidy offered for these new drugs range from 35-50% assuming a 30% mark-up on the current distribution price.

New generic labels and new drug presentations have also been added for some existing drugs thereby improving the choice of drugs available to NHF beneficiaries.

In addition anti-cholesterol drugs already on the list for treating high cholesterol have also been added for the treatment of hypertension, diabetes and Ischaemic Heart Disease. For NHF beneficiaries with these conditions, this should ensure better control of their diseases.

Speaking last November at a Press luncheon when over 70 drugs were added at one time Chairman of the Board of the National Health Fund, Mr. Ryland Campbell, said ?The process of review of the prescription items is an on-going one and so from time to time the NHF will be making changes to ensure that access to the most appropriate drugs are available to NHF card holders to assist them in the better management of their chronic illnesses.?

Under Individual Benefits, NHF cardholders access help to purchase specific prescription items for 14 chronic diseases. The conditions are: arthritis, asthma, breast cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, glaucoma, high cholesterol, hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, major depression, prostate cancer, psychosis, rheumatic fever heart disease and vascular disease.

The Medical Review Committee of the NHF monitors the benefits schedule of prescription items and makes recommendations for changes.
