NHF ADDS TWO ITEMS TO JADEP DRUG LIST

NHF ADDS TWO ITEMS TO JADEP DRUG LIST

For The Treatment of Hypertension and Diabetes

Effective tomorrow, March 1, 2011, the National Health Fund will make available on the Jamaica Drug for the Elderly Programme (JADEP), Felodipine used to treat hypertension and an Insulin Glargine Pre-filled Pen used in the treatment of diabetes.

Felodipine is a new Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) on the JADEP Drug list and will be available as Plendil 5 milligrams and 10 milligrams tablets, each with a monthly allowance of 30 tablets for JADEP beneficiaries.

Insulin Glargine is already an API on the JADEP List; it will now be available in a new presentation, as Lantus Solostar Pre-filled Disposable 3 millilitres Pen. It is an alternative to the vial, which currently exists on the JADEP programme. The advantages of the pen are ease of administration, greater convenience and refrigeration is not required. The monthly allowance for JADEP beneficiaries is three (3) pens.

There are approximately 225,000 Jamaican residents, 60 years and older, who are enrolled for benefits on the JADEP programme. They have access to seventy-four drug items and pay only $40 for each of these items monthly, on presentation of their prescription.
