NHF Allocates $13Million to Fund the Construction of Brainerd Health Centre in St. Mary

The contract valued $13,000,000.00 to commence the construction a health centre in Brainerd, St. Mary, was signed on Friday, October 12, 2012 at a ceremony held at the Annotto Bay Hospital. The project which is funded by the National Health Fund (NHF), will see the transformation of the Brainerd Community Centre into a dual purpose complex within the next four (4) months.

The complex will house the Community Centre and a Type 1 Health Centre which will be providing services to include ante-natal and post natal care, chronic disease management and control, family planning and children health care.

The Minister of Health, The Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson lauded the work being done by the NHF and expressed that events such as this will be the norm across the island. He added that 80 Health Centres have been completed over the last 3 – 4 years.

The Acting Director of Operations and Maintenance, North-East Regional Health Authority (NEHRA), Mr. Paul Young, highlighted the problems being faced by the community including the fact that the current health centre is being operated from a church and many persons are forced to seek medical attention in far distances such as Highgate and several areas of St. Catherine.

NHF’s Board Chairman, Mr. Sterling Soares expressed his delight in the NHF participating in this rehabilitation work. He said that, “it is expected that more people will visit the health centre and obtain information and treatment they need to live a healthy life.”
