NHF Approves $4million Grant For A New School Bus For Dental Auxiliary School – To Support Clinical Training For Dental Students

The National Health Fund has approved a grant of $4 million for the purchase of a new school bus for the Dental Auxiliary School, Arthur Wint Drive in Kingston.

The bus is be used in the School’s Dental Programme to transport patients from early childhood institutions, primary and secondary schools to and from the Dental Auxiliary School for dental treatment. Three to four sets of patients are transported daily to and from the School. The patients are examined/ treated by students in training.

Dr. Theon Jones, Director of the dental training institution says, “The old school bus, which is now over 15 years is no longer reliable and is setting back the School’s training programmes. A reliable school bus plays a critical role in ensuring that dental students receive and treat enough patients in a timely manner, in order to meet the clinical requirements of their programme, which solidifies academic and laboratory training.”
He says it is also expected that the bus will be used to transport staff and students to work on the School’s Mobile Dental Clinic when that programme comes into being.

The Dental Auxiliary School provides quality teaching and learning experiences that equip graduates with the required knowledge, attitude and technical skills to deliver high quality promotive, preventive and curative oral health care. The School is the only one of its kind in the Caribbean and offers training for dental nurses, dental assistants, dental hygienists & dental laboratory technologists. Graduates are employed both locally and in the Caribbean.

This is the second grant the School is receiving from the NHF- the first was a grant of $1.6 million for an internal cooling system for the Clinical Treatment Areas at the School also aimed at supporting the training programmes at the institution.
