NHF BENEFICIARIES TO AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE JADEP HEALTH CARD ON REACHING THEIR 60th BIRYHDAY

NHF BENEFICIARIES TO AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE JADEP HEALTH CARD ON REACHING THEIR 60th BIRYHDAY

The National Health Fund, NHF will begin this month, September 2005, to automatically issue Jamaica Drug for the Elderly (JADEP) Health Cards to NHF beneficiaries on reaching their sixtieth birthday. Approximately 110 persons falling in this group are to receive their JADEP Health Cards this month and the cards have already been mailed out.

Mr. Cecil White, Vice President of Operations at NHF says, ?Using the NHF database for beneficiaries holding the NHF Health Card for all ages, it is possible to identify those persons who attain sixty years old and a list of these persons will be generated, for each month, following which JADEP cards are produced and mailed to them.? The JADEP cards for these beneficiaries will be activated on their sixtieth birthdays.

NHF provides 72 drugs for ten chronic conditions, free of cost to JADEP card holders. A small fee of $40 to dispense each month?s supply of a drug may be required by the pharmacy. The use of the JADEP card will therefore further reduce the cost of pharmaceutical care for these NHF beneficiaries, whose drugs are on the JADEP list.

Approximately 110,000 persons are enrolled on the JADEP programme. All Jamaican residents, sixty years of age and older, who have been diagnosed with one or more of the conditions covered, are eligible to enrol for JADEP membership. The illnesses covered are: Hypertension or high blood pressure; Diabetes or sugar; Glaucoma or pressure in the eyes; Cardiac or heart disease; Arthritis; Asthma; Vascular conditions or circulatory problems; Psychotic conditions; Benign Prostate hyperplasia or enlarged prostate and High Cholesterol.

Approximately 200 pharmacists across the island accept JADEP cards.
