NHF CLAIMS UP 60% AS BENEFICIARIES ENJOY NEW ADDITION OF DRUGS AND INCREASED SUBSIDIES SINCE NOVEMBER 2004

There has been a sixty percent increase in the number of claims to the National Health Fund (NHF) since November 1, 2004 when seventy-three drugs comprising approximately three hundred prescription items, were added to the NHF Individual Benefits list.

At the end of October 2004, 5,769 claims were processed by the NHF for prescriptions. By the end of November this figure increased by 29% to 7,435 claims and by December the number of claims jumped to 9,270.

646 of the claims in November and 1,656 of the claims in December were for the new drugs that were added. The increase in claims could also be attributed to the increased subsidies which were also provided for existing prescription items.

Mrs. Ann Logan, Individual Benefits Manager, NHF says she expects this trend to continue in 2005 and projects that claims will increase significantly over last year as more persons with the specified chronic diseases covered by the NHF become aware of the significant financial assistance available for purchasing prescription items under the NHF Individual Benefits Programme and begin to use their health cards or enroll for the benefits. She notes that the NHF Individual Benefits Booklet which was first published in November 2004 has been a great help in assisting NHF cardholders to identify whether their prescription items are covered by the NHF and the amount of subsidy offered for each item. She is encouraging more persons to get a copy of this booklet and inform themselves of the NHF benefits.

Mr. Horace Davidson, of the Caledonia Mall Pharmacy in Mandeville, the pharmacy with the highest number of claims for December for the newly added drugs on the NHF Individual Benefits List, noted that his clients who previously had to purchase these items out of their own pockets are now enjoying the assistance offered by the NHF.

Under Individual Benefits, NHF cardholders access help to purchase specific prescription items for 14 chronic diseases. The conditions are: arthritis, asthma, breast cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, glaucoma, high cholesterol, hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, major depression, prostate cancer, psychosis, rheumatic heart disease and vascular disease.
