NHF conducts thousands of free screenings for Heart Month

The National Health Fund (NHF) conducted over 13 thousand free health screening tests during February as part of its Heart Month initiative aimed at improving early detection and management of cardiovascular disease in Jamaica.

The screenings were delivered through Drug Serv pharmacies, community health fairs and public health facilities across the island, forming part of a coordinated effort to address Jamaica’s high burden of hypertension and related heart conditions. Chronic non-communicable diseases such as these remain among the leading causes of illness and death in Jamaica.

Throughout the month, members of the public accessed free checks for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, haemoglobin and body mass index (BMI). Medical consultations were also provided at selected outreach events to support follow-up care and referrals where necessary.

In Kingston, the Downtown Health Expo, held on Wednesday, February 25, at the Jubilee Commercial Center, formed part of the wider outreach, offering on-the-spot testing and physician consultations.

NHF Chief Executive Officer Everton Anderson said community-based initiatives play an important role in reaching persons who may not routinely access health services. “These events allow us to meet people where they are and encourage early screening for the conditions we cover under the NHFCard,” he said. “Improving access to testing and information is critical to reducing long-term complications and lowering the cost of care for individuals and the wider health system.”

In addition to screening services, the NHF provided information on the NHFCard, which offers subsidies on medication and diagnostic tests for persons living with approved chronic conditions.

The Heart Month outreach was supported by parish and regional health authorities, municipal corporations, the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Heart Foundation of Jamaica.

The NHF is encouraging Jamaicans to continue routine monitoring of their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels beyond Heart Month, noting that sustained vigilance is essential to curbing the high rates of cardiovascular disease.
