NHF EXPANDS DRUGS LIST

Eleven drugs available on the National Health Fund Card for the treatment of hypertension have been made available for beneficiaries with diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that can lead to complications affecting all the major organs of the body. Therefore the list of drugs available to NHF beneficiaries with diabetes, includes not only those to control diabetes but other medications for the treatment of heart disease and neurological complications. The drugs that have been added to the diabetes drug list are: Candesartan ; Candesartan + Hydrochlorothiazide ; Irbesartan ; Losartan ; Losartan + Hydrochlorothiazide ; Telmisartan ; Telmisartan + Hydrochlorothiazide ; Valsartan ; Valsartan + Hydrochlorothiazide ; Gabapentin; Carbamazepine.

Clopidogrel listed for the treatment of ischaemic heart disease, is now also listed under vascular conditions.

Other changes to the NHF Drug list which became effective on January 24, 2006 include the addition of new generic labels for the active ingredients ? Fluoxetine, Salbutamol, Simvastatin, Dorzolamide and Travoprost, used in the treatment of various conditions covered by the NHF.

The number of active ingredients covered by the NHF have also been increased to one hundred and seventy-nine (179), with the addition of Unoprostone Isopropyl, otherwise known as Rescula, an eye drop used in the treatment of glaucoma. A NHF subsidy of $1,161.68 is offered for each 5 ml vial of this eye drop.

The NHF gives financial assistance with the purchase of over 800 prescription items for 179 active ingredients, to all residents in Jamaica regardless of age or economic status who are suffering from fifteen chronic diseases. These diseases are Arthritis, Asthma, Breast cancer, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) , Prostate cancer, Diabetes, Epilepsy, Major depression, Psychosis, Glaucoma, High cholesterol, Hypertension, Ischaemic heart disease, Rheumatic heart disease, Vascular disease.
