More than 6,000 Jamaicans registered for thyroid disease under the NHFCard Programme now have access to an additional medication to help manage symptoms associated with the condition. Effective September 7, 2026, the National Health Fund (NHF) added Propranolol to the list of medications covered for the treatment of thyroid disease, representing an annual investment of approximately J$1.65 million.
Previously, Propranolol was available under the NHFCard Programme to beneficiaries registered for hypertension and ischaemic heart disease. The expanded coverage means that persons registered for thyroid disease can now also receive an NHF subsidy for the medication, helping to reduce the amount they pay out of pocket.
Propranolol is commonly used to help manage symptoms of thyrotoxicosis, a condition in which there is too much thyroid hormone activity in the body. The condition can cause symptoms such as a rapid heartbeat, trembling, anxiety and increased sensitivity to heat and, if not properly managed, may lead to serious health complications. The addition of Propranolol is intended to support the treatment of persons with thyrotoxicosis by providing greater access to medication that can quickly relieve these symptoms.
The expanded NHFCard benefit covers Propranolol tablets in 10mg, 20mg and 40mg strengths and forms part of the NHF’s ongoing efforts to improve access to essential medicines, reduce the financial burden of healthcare and support Jamaicans in better managing chronic illnesses.
Chief Executive Officer of the NHF, Everton Anderson, underscored that the initiative aligns directly with the Fund’s corporate mandate to make chronic disease care more accessible and affordable.
“Our core objective is to continually refine our health subsidies to meet the needs of our beneficiaries,” Anderson said. “By expanding Propranolol coverage, we are addressing a critical gap in supportive care for thyrotoxicosis, empowering beneficiaries to manage challenging symptoms effectively and maintain a better quality of life.”
Beneficiaries already registered for Thyroid Disease can access the subsidized medication at participating pharmacies islandwide. The NHF is also encouraging individuals living with thyroid disease who do not yet hold an NHFCard to speak with their doctor about completing an application to get registered and start accessing these subsidies.
