NHF FUNDED COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AT CORNWALL REGIONAL HOSPITAL, TO IMPROVE SERVICES THERE

NHF FUNDED COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AT CORNWALL REGIONAL HOSPITAL, TO IMPROVE SERVICES THERE

The Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay now has a modern communications system, a Meridian M2250, that provides internal and external telecommunications services for over 500 users. This replaced the obsolete Meridian MR50 switchboard, installed in 1993 and which posed several operational problems and made the communication system at the hospital inefficient.

The project for the upgraded communications system was financed by the National Health Fund at a cost of $16,750,000.

The new system provides cabling for both data and voice services throughout the hospital and allows for the provision of a data point at any location where a telephone is provided. It also provides for improved inbound and outbound flows; more telephone extensions; flexibility in extension and private line assignments and improved resiliency due to system, element and core facility redundancy.

Mr. Everton Anderson, Chief Executive Officer of the Cornwall Regional Hospital says, ?Communication is vital to the operations of the hospital and the new system has provided a modern infrastructure on which the hospital can build effective communications activities.?

One such activity that is now under active consideration is a hospital laboratory system which will enable the laboratory to post patient results on the computerized system which can be accessed by doctors in other departments of the hospital using secure passwords. This will result in enhanced timeliness of vital information and improvements in patient care.

The CEO notes that already the hospital is realizing savings of approximately $125,000 per month or twenty-five percent (25%) of the monthly telephone bills for the hospital. He expects even more savings when TELCEL units are installed from the mobile telephone providers thereby reducing the cost of each mobile call made from the hospital switchboard.

The National Health Fund has also approved funding for a similar communications system at Bustamante Hospital for Children in Kingston.
