NHF INCREASES THE NUMBER OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS FOR INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS & IMPROVES SUBSIDIES FOR PURCHASE OF MEDICATION

Chairman of the Board of the National Health Fund, Mr. Ryland Campbell, yesterday announced that effective Monday November 1, 2004 over 250 new items representing more than 70 drugs will be added for NHF Individual Benefits bringing the total number of prescription items to over eight hundred (800). In addition he announced that the subsidy provided will also be increased from an average of 35 percent to an average of

50 percent of the claim value.

NHF Individual Benefits, allow cardholders to access help for the purchase of specific prescription items for 14 chronic diseases. The conditions are: arthritis, asthmas, breast cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, glaucoma, high cholesterol, hypertension, ischaemic heart diseases, major depression, prostate cancer, psychosis, rheumatic fever heart disease and vascular disease.

Mr. Campbell who was speaking at a Media Luncheon to announce the increases said ?The NHF is committed to fulfilling its mandate of improving individual benefits for persons with chronic diseases who are enrolled with the NHF.? He said, ?The process of review of the prescription items is an on-going one and so from time to time the NHF will be making changes to ensure that access to the most appropriate drugs are available to NHF card holders to assist them in the better management of their chronic illnesses.?

In order to bring the level of subsidy up for all drugs to between 35-50% of the lowest available market price for the prescription item the amount paid by the NHF for some items were increased by nearly 300 percent. For example the previous $0.68 provided for each Cataflam 50 mg tablet for cardholders with arthritis has been increased for $2.65, a $290% increase.

Similarly for Asthma beneficiaries, the $264.55 subsidy for the Becloforte 250 mcg (Becotide) has been increased to $407.07 ? a 54% increase. Nifedipine tablet subsidy has been increased by 200 percent from $1.67 to $5.01 per tablet.

Among the drugs newly added to the Individual Benefits list are Lisperaal 250 mg injection with a subsidy of $5,279.63 for beneficiaries with psychosis and, for beneficiaries with arthritis, Celebrex 100mg tablet with a subsidy of $ 24.70 per tablet.

Mr. Rae Barrett, CEO of the NHF also speaking at the Luncheon introduced the NHF Individual Benefits Booklet which provides a detailed list of all the conditions and the prescription items covered as well as the amount of subsidy for each. The booklet, Mr. Barrett said will more effectively communicate the range and extent of subsidies provided as NHF Individual Benefits.
