NHF PROVIDES J$48 MILLION FOR PHASE 2 OF JAMAICA CUBA EYE CARE PROJECT

NHF PROVIDES J$48 MILLION FOR PHASE 2 OF JAMAICA CUBA EYE CARE PROJECT

The National Health Fund (NHF) has approved a grant of J$48 million to support the activities of Phase Two of the Jamaica Cuba Eye Care Project.

Under this Phase the Project has been expanded to include the provision of white canes to facilitate safe mobility of patients who are visually impaired. 1,200 persons are expected to benefit from this initiative.

In order to improve project effectiveness in identifying and assisting those persons with eye conditions that can cause blindness, screening will be done over a period of 15- 20 days, in each parish. Mrs. Claudette Yearde, Project Manager for Eye Care Project noted that under Phase One screenings were conducted island-wide sporadically resulting in some persons missing the opportunity to get screened. She says, “By staying in each parish over 15-20 days the project will be more effective in identifying persons with various eye pathologies and provide help in improving their vision.”

The Jamaica/Cuba Eye Care Project is based on an agreement between the Governments of Jamaica and Cuba with the overall objective to reduce the prevalence of blindness in Jamaica by providing cost effective supplementary surgical eye care services to Jamaican nationals who have difficulty accessing affordable eye care in Jamaica.

The additional grant of $48 million for phase 2 of the project brings the total amount of NHF grants for the Jamaica Cuba Eye Care Project to $80.4 million.
