Contracts valued over $3.3B were signed today (September 6), by the National Health Fund for the purchase of pharmaceutical items for government hospitals and health centres islandwide. Just over forty (40) local and international pharmaceutical suppliers responded to bids to supply more than seven hundred (700) pharmaceutical items. The items supplied will be those listed on the Ministry of Health’s Vital Essential and Necessary (VEN) Drug List and the Jamaica Drug for the Elderly Programme (JADEP), drug list, which is managed by the NHF.

Mr. Sterling Soares, Chairman of the NHF noted that in this our 50th year of independence the nation has a lot to celebrate with Jamaica’s comprehensive healthcare system. He noted that in coming months NHF will be upgrading its warehouse and inventory management system, which will facilitate improvement in storage and distribution of pharmaceutical items. He also thanked the suppliers for their partnership in making the tender exercise a successful one.

In his address, the Minister of Health, the Hon. Dr.Fenton Ferguson highlighted the importance of the pharmacy service and expressed his gratitude to the many pharmaceutical suppliers present. He noted that there will be further rationalization of the pharmacy services. This he said will aim to improve patients’ health outcomes, operations relating to cost effectiveness and timely delivery of services. It will also improve on the availability and access to pharmaceutical service along with improvement in equitable distribution of resources – human, financial and equipment, the Minister said.

The drugs being supplied are both generic and branded products and the awards were approved earlier this year .The procurement processes were executed in accordance with the GOJ Procurement Guidelines ensuring transparency, integrity, confidentially and accountability.

In 2011, the Government of Jamaica took the decision to cease the operations of Health Corporation Limited (HCL) and that the NHF assumed the functions previously performed by HCL. The NHF ACT was amended to facilitate these changes.
