NHF SPONSOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY WEEK, April 4-10, 2010 – Theme: Active Cities, Healthy Lives

The National Health Fund (NHF) is sponsoring several activities to observe Physical Activity Week in Jamaica, from April 4 -10 this year, as it continues to play a central role in supporting physical activity promotion in Jamaica. The Week is an extension of World Physical Activity Day, April 6, the theme of which is Active Cities, Healthy Lives.

Mr. Hugh Lawson, CEO for the NHF says, “With the epidemic of chronic diseases affecting Jamaica the promotion of physical activity is high on the agenda of the NHF. However many persons living in the city often opt not to exercise outdoors because of the fear of crime and this impacts negatively on their health”. Through the activities planned for the week we hope to encourage persons living in the city to venture outdoors to safe locations like Emancipation Park or participate in their workplaces or at school.

During the week two major competitions will be launched. They are the NHF Basic and Primary Schools Hoola Hoopers Competition and the return of the NHF Work It Out Challenge 2010, a weight loss competition between workplaces. Last year thirty-four companies completed competition which lasted over 12 weeks. This year the NHF Work It Out Challenge has been extended to 37 weeks to ensure a healthy weight loss programme and the long-term adoption of healthy lifestyle practices.

Other the activities planned for the Week are special exercise routines for Emancipation Park in Kingston on April 6-8 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. JAMFIT will be coordinating these events.

The celebration of the week will culminate in a NHF Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday April 10, 2010, at Turtle River Park in Ocho Rios, where there will be free health checks, activities and entertainment for the entire family.
