NHF Sponsors Activities For Salt Awareness Week (March 21-27)

“Eat Less Salt, Protect Your Heart” – NHF Encourages it Members.

Mr. Hugh Lawson, Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Fund is encouraging individuals, especially those with high blood pressure to make a lifestyle change of lowering their salt intake and reducing their risk for heart attacks and strokes.

Mr. Lawson’s caution came ahead of Salt Awareness Week which is being observed internationally from March 20-26, 2011. The Jamaica Health and Lifestyle Survey 2007-2008 showed that 94% of persons with hypertension were not on a low salt diet.

Mr. Lawson noted that up to the end of February 2011, over 17,000 persons are enrolled with the NHF for high blood pressure, representing the largest group of persons enrolled with the Fund. This he says is approximately 26% of beneficiaries.

The NHF is using the opportunity during this week to encourage its members and the public in general to reduce their salt intake and protect their heart and their health.

Throughout the week from 10 a.m. to 2pm, free blood pressure checks will be offered at the NHF Customer Care centre, 1st Floor Towers, New Kingston.
