NHF SUPPORTING EXPANSION OF EMERGENCY CARDIAC CARE PROGRAMME FOR THE HEART FOUNDATION.

NHF SUPPORTING EXPANSION OF EMERGENCY CARDIAC CARE PROGRAMME FOR THE HEART FOUNDATION.

The Emergency Cardiac Care Programme of the Heart Foundation of Jamaica has received a grant of US$60,000 from the National Health Fund to expand its training programme especially for health professionals.

The Heart Foundation has been offering certificate courses in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) since 1984. This training provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize life treatening cardiopulmonary emergencies and how to respond to them. Two categories of CRP courses are offered. These are Basic CPR for beginners and Advanced CPR for health professionals. The Heart Foundation of Jamaica is an official training organization for the American Heart Association.

This training is particularly important in light of the number of persons who suffer from cardiovascular disease and heart attacks often resulting in death. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in Jamaica.

In anticipation of the Emergency Medical Services Bill, which proposes that all doctors and nurses be required to be certified in Basic Life Support, the demand for Emergency Cardiac Care training will be greatly expanded. Doctors and nurses working in specialist areas, such as intensive care, accident and emergency and operating theatre, will also be required to be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

The NHF grant is being to purchase equipment for the training programmes including adult, child and baby mannequins; electrocardiogram simulators, airway management trainers, disposable items such as lung and face shields and educational aids including a multi-media projector and computer.

This is the second grant that the NHF has made to the Heart Foundation. A grant of JA$2 million was provided for upgrading the Foundation?s Mobile Screening Service to conduct tests and screening islandwide. The services offered are ECG, blood pressure, cholesterol, haemoglobin and blood sugar.

Both grants were made from the NHF?s Institutional Benefits – Health Promotion and Protection Fund, which provides grants to organizations in the private or public sector, and projects which promote health and prevent illnesses in Jamaica.
