National Health Fund will be adding Lupus (proper name Systemic Lupus Erythematous), to the list of conditions covered by the NHF Card by the end of April 2019. This was announced by the Prime Minister the Most Hon Andrew Holness in his budget presentation yesterday Tuesday March 19, 2019. This is expected to reduce the impact of this life-threatening disease and improve patients’ quality of life, through improved access to medication.

The NHF will announce further details regarding the pharmaceuticals which will be covered. Patients with Lupus, wishing to access this benefit must apply for the NHF Card by completing the yellow application form and a TRN is required. If they are already enrolled for another condition covered by NHF, they must complete the Change Form. Both must be signed by a doctor.

It is estimated that approximately 6,000 individuals in Jamaica have the condition, with the majority being females will benefit from the addition of Lupus to the NHF Card Programme.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the organs of the body. Patients with this condition are at risk for a number of complications including arthritis, neurological problems (strokes, seizures) and renal complications.

The annual cost to the NHF for coverage of subsidies for the treatment of Lupus is estimated at $340 Million.

NHF, an Agency of the Ministry of Health is now observing 15 years of service to the people of Jamaica. Over this period of time, the Fund has provided approximately $30 Billion in subsidies for pharmaceuticals to NHF Card holders living with 16 chronic illnesses.
