NHF TO PROVIDE SUBSIDIES FOR 350,000 PRESCRIPTIONS FOR NHF BENEFICIARIES IN 2005

Mr. Rae Barrett, Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Fund, NHF projects that for 2005, the NHF will provide subsidies for approximately 350,000 prescriptions for persons enrolled with for NHF Individual Benefits and the Jamaica Drug for the Elderly Programme, JADEP. (Since July 2004 JADEP is being administered by the NHF).

Speaking at an Awards Ceremony last evening (December 2, 2004) at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, to recognize the Pharmacy Providers with the highest number of prescriptions filled for NHF beneficiaries, between January and October 2004, Mr. Barrett said ?Since the beginning of 2004 the number of prescriptions filled under the NHF Individual Benefits programme has grown tremendously. Between January and October this year, 49,000 prescriptions have been filled, a total of 56,177 prescriptions since the inception of the NHF.?

In addition Mr. Barrett noted that under the JADEP programme approximately 15,000 prescriptions are filled each month and this figure is expected to increase next year.

Ten pharmacies were presented with awards in the categories of Public Pharmacy Provider and Community Pharmacy Provider. Savanna-la-Mar Hospital Pharmacy, Westmoreland, the top Public Pharmacy also walked away with the award for NHF Pharmacy of the Year 2004, having filled the highest number of prescriptions. Mr. Barrett said that it is significant that the ten pharmacies that were being honoured had filled approximately forty percent (38.8%) of the total number of prescriptions.

Presently there are 179 NHF Pharmacy Providers and 142 JADEP Providers with 130 pharmacies offering both services.

Also speaking at the Awards function was Mr. Ryland Campbell, Chairman of the NHF who boasted that since its inception every single claim made for the 56,000 prescriptions filled by NHF Pharmacy Providers, were paid within seven working days from the time the claim is received by the NHF. He noted that this built confidence in the NHF operations and encouraged pharmacies to sign up to deliver NHF benefits.
