NINTEEN MORE PHARMACIES FOR UPGRADING

Phase two of the upgrading programme for public pharmacies is now underway being sponsored by the National Health Fund (NHF). The nineteen pharmacies are to be improved in this phase include eighteen spread across all four Regional Health Authorities and also the University Hospital of the West Indies pharmacy.

Among the works to be carried are installation of computers and software, training of pharmacy staff, procurement of pharmacy equipment and renovation of infrastructure.

The pharmacy upgrade is part of the mandate of the NHF to provide support to the public health system to ensure that they improve the quality of their services to the public and are able to meet the demand for access to NHF drugs. Under the NHF individuals suffering from 14 chronic diseases are able to obtain assistance with over 400 prescribed pharmaceuticals.

Last year the NHF upgraded ten public sector pharmacies in preparation for the introduction of the individual benefits.
