North East Regional Health Authority Increases Patient Safety With Comprehensive Hand Hygiene Project

The North East Regional Health Authority (NERHA), which has responsibility for the management of Hospitals and Health Centres in St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland is to embark on a comprehensive programme to ensure adequate hand washing fixtures in all its facilities. This is part of the Region’s policy to improve patient safety and quality management.

“Proper hand hygiene is essential to improving the safety of patient care in all clinical areas,” says Dr. Michele Roofe, Regional Technical Director, NERHA. She says the system-wide effort to ensure the sustained compliance of health care professionals through upgrading the facilities necessary for these practices, will reduce the risk to patients of acquiring Health Care Associated Infection.

A National Health Fund (NHF) Grant of $2.9 million will be used to fund the procurement and installation of hand washing fixtures including new hand washing basins, soap dispensers and towel dispensers.
