REGISTRATION FOR GOJ HEALTH CARDS NEARS 50% OF PERSONS USING THE SYSTEM – DISTRIBUTION TO BEGIN CLOSER TO ACTIVATION OF SYSTEM

The National Health Fund, NHF is advising persons who have registered for the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) Health Card that their cards will be distributed to them when the process of selection of private pharmacies participating in the programme is further advanced. Mr. Hugh Lawson, CEO of NHF says, “While we are processing applications and printing the GOJ Health Cards for persons we do not want to issue the cards too far in advance of when the system is ready for delivery of benefits. There is still some work to be done in the process of selecting the private pharmacies and we hope to conclude this process soon.”

Approximately 7,000 persons are now registering each week for the GOJ Health Card. Registration which started on September 1, 2009 at all Public Hospitals and some Health Centres island wide, has reached nearly 60,000 persons at October 16, 2009. This is just under 50% of the initial target of 140,000 who are currently using the system. This figure represents the usual number of persons accessing health care from the public sector annually.

The introduction of the GOJ Health Card is a Ministry of Health initiative, which will see public patients using the Card to fill prescriptions generated at a public hospital or health centre, at pharmacies in these facilities and also at participating private sector pharmacies.

NHF is overseeing the registration and administration of the GOJ Health Card and is also responsible for the public education campaign.
