ST. ANN’S BAY HOSPITAL OPERATING THEATRE REFURBISHED WITH $11.3 MILLION GRANT FROM NHF

The Operating Theatre at the St. Ann?s Bay Hospital which was refurbished with a grant of $11.74 million, from the National Health Fund, NHF was officially opened yesterday (Wednesday 22, 2006), following a brief ceremony on the hospital compound.

The refurbishing of the operating theatre suite was extensive. It included the replacement of the roof of the theatre and the installation of a new air condition system. The old surgical lights which were approximately 20 years old were also replaced and a new autoclave was purchased and installed. The hospital now boasts a new medical gas set-up and alarm system.

Speaking on behalf of the staff of the Operating Theatre, Dr. Peter Scarlett, Anesthesiologist, said ?With the refurbishment, the Operating Theatre is now a top class facility which allows staff to carry out their work efficiently and in a more comfortable environment.?

Dr. Scarlett said it would be difficult to find a better operating theatre anywhere else. He expressed thanks to the Beth Jacobs Clinic which facilitated emergency operations during the refurbishment of the Operating Theatre.

The St. Ann?s Bay Hospital is the referral hospital in the North East Region and performs approximately sixty percent of the surgical operations performed in the Region. In 2004 for example of the 4,218 operations performed in the North East Region, 2,482 were done at the St. Ann?s Bay Hospital Operating theatre.

Dr. Michael Whittingham, Chairman of the Board of North East Regional Health Authority thanked the National Health Fund for its support of the Region. He noted that the North East Region has in fact received approvals for projects valued at over $165 million from the National Health Fund. This includes some $32 million approved for repairs to the health facilities in this region damaged by Hurricane Ivan; Over $133 million, for other projects including the refurbishing of the Operating theatre which received a NHF grant of just over $11 million. He noted that a contract will be signed soon for the construction of a new health centre in Highgate, St. Mary.
