Cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, religion, or financial status. Among the many types of cancer, cervical cancer is one of the most common in women, while prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed in men.
Pap Smears & Cervical Cancer
Studies show that Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Jamaican women, but regularly getting tests such as a pap smear can significantly reduce the risk.
But What’s a Pap Smear?
A pap smear is a simple procedure used to screen for cervical cancer in women. It’s recommended that all women aged 21-65 get regular pap smears to catch any abnormalities early. Here’s a quick guide:
- Ages 21-29: Schedule a pap smear every 3 years.
- Ages 30-64: Have a pap smear or HPV test every 3 years.
- High-risk women (21 and over, especially those who are HIV positive): Screen annually.
Prostate Cancer in Men
Men are also at risk of cancer in the reproductive organs, Jamaicans especially since we account for the highest incidence of prostate cancer in the world. With the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test however, which measures PSA levels in the blood, early detection of prostate cancer is possible. As such, men are encouraged to get screened every year.
Your NHFCard Can Help!
Healthcare can be expensive, and the NHF understands, so we offer subsidies to make it more affordable. For instance, women aged 21 and over can now get $1,300 towards a pap smear every three years, and men aged 40 and over can receive $1,600 towards a PSA test with their NHFCard.

If you don’t have an NHFCard the application process is easy! Simply complete section A of the application form, submit it to any NHFCard Center close to you, and receive your card, ready-to-use within fifteen minutes. That’s it!
