Things you should know about cervical cancer

Annually, April is observed as Cervical Cancer Awareness month but how informed are you of the condition? Did you know that any female with a cervix is prone to Cervical Cancer? Are you aware that smokers, women who have given birth three or more times, or have several sexual partners are at a greater risk?The more you know the better. We consulted Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Dr Astrid Batchelor on the matter. Here are some important facts that you need to know about the condition:

Cervical Cancer is the fourth most common cancer overall, the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Jamaican women and is most common in women over 30 years old.

Cancer of the cervix may not show any signs in the early stages. In its advanced stage, women experience abnormal bleeding or discharge from the vagina, bleeding after sex, bleeding, or spotting between monthly periods. If you are facing any of thesesymptomsvisit your Doctor right away.
